Weekly Digest - October 26, 2026

Happy Monday All!

Three pieces this week: one about Laravel quietly running hundreds of queries, one about plush elephants, and one about the workflow I use to keep publishing.

Your ORM Wrote 300 Queries for One Page: Fixing N+1 in Laravel

A loop that reads $episode->podcast looks fine with 20 rows of test data and turns into 300+ queries once production data shows up. I walk through spotting the problem with DB::listen(), Debugbar, and Telescope, then fixing it with with() and withCount(). My favorite piece is turning on Model::preventLazyLoading() outside production so N+1 bugs fail in CI before a user ever sees them.

elePHPants with Damien Seguy

I talked with Damien Seguy about the elePHPant, from Vincent Pontier's original logo doodle to the plush toys user groups and conferences hand out today. Damien has 6,054 of them at home, so he knows a thing or two about trading them and what goes into making your own. We also covered Exakat, his static analysis engine, and the PHP onboarding book he wants feedback on.

The Pack Process: A 6-Stage Content Creation Workflow From Idea to Promote

Over on The Steady Pack I wrote up the six stages I use for every piece of content: idea, script, record, edit, publish, and promote. Winging it burns willpower on every episode, and a system keeps going on the low-energy days when motivation won't. The post ends with a seven-step plan you can start this week.

See you next Monday.
