Over the weekend I watched The Darjeeling Limited on my AppleTV. The story is a little complicated but their three main characters are in India trying to track down their mother. During the course of the movie they have to lug around about ten pieces of luggage wherever they go. A couple of them where large steamer trunks and looked like they were hard to carry around. In the end they were symbolic but as I watched I realized that I wouldn’t want to carry all that if I went on a trip like that.
The weekly photo update.
I just upgraded to version 2.5 of WordPress. I must say the new admin interface is really nice but now I have to fight with finding where some things went. Please let me know if you run into any problems.
One of the things that I love/hate about media player software is rating media. It’s great that I have a quick way to get to the songs I really like. The two that I have used so far (iTunes and Zune) both allow you to rank songs on a scale from 0-5 stars. So 5 stars = excellent, 1 star = crap, and 0 stars = not rated. The problem is that you can’t rank something 4.5 stars for a song that’s really good but not excellent.
Another thing that iTunes does is that it keep tracks of the number of times a song has been played and when. I use this feature to have a smart playlist of podcasts that I haven’t heard yet. If you don’t finish the song completely it doesn’t increment the play count.
I think that a better way to rank songs would be to have the ratio of times the song was complete compared to the number of times the song was started. So if I never listen to a song fully it would have a ranking of 0 which would imply that I hate it and songs that I listen to all the time would have a ranking of 100. If the song hasn’t been finished for a long time the rating can slowly decrement to half it’s ranking after a year or so (this could easily be modified to a user’s preferences). It seems to me that this would be really easy to implement and really would be a better way to rank media.
The link to upgrade WordPress has been bugging me for the last couple weeks so I think I should actually go through and upgrade WordPress and all my plug-ins. I have been fighting with the darn spam comments over the last couple days so upgrading to the new version of Akismet might not be a bad idea. I’m also going to look into moving the RSS feed over to Feedburner and enabling WP-cache. Without a doubt I will test my updates before I copy them over but it might cause unfortunate problems so bare with me. 🙂
I have been going back and forth about signing back up for Gamefly. Gamefly is basically the Netflix for video games. It allows you to have 1 or 2 games out at a time for as long as you want without late fees. As a bonus it has video games that might not be rentable through your local video store. It’s really nice because you don’t usually have to wait for people to return the games to get them.
Amanda signed up for it last year and I really liked it. We got to a point last spring where we didn’t have any time to actually play the games and it ended up not being worth it. We ended up canceling the subscription but now I’m thinking about going back to it.
Normally, I buy a game and IF I finish it I never come back to play it unless it’s a really fun game (Halo, Half-Life 2, etc.) and I’m out the $60 that I payed for the game. This has been compounded by the fact that there are a lot of games that have come out in the last four months that I still want to play. I know for sure that I want to play Condemned 2 ASAP and right now I’m planning on purchasing it for this weekend. However, instead of buying the game for $60 I could apply that to 4 months of Gamefly.
I guess I need to make a decision soon if I want a new game for the weekend…
Just a quick update…
Because today obeys this equation:
((19*t+u-w-(u-(u+8)\25)+1)\3)+15)mod30)+(32+2*x+2*y-(19*t+u-w- (u-(u+8)\25)+1)\3)+15)mod30)-z)mod7)-7*(t+11*(19*t+u-w(u- (u+8)\25)+1)\3)+15)mod30)+22*(32+2*x+2*y-(19*t+u-w-(u- (u+8)\25)+1)\3)+15)mod30)-g)mod7)+114)\31
We get to celebrate some religious something or other with colored eggs and chocolate. 🙂
For those of you who don’t know about This Week In Photography (TWIP) I would highly recommend you check it out. It’s a short (an hour or so) podcast that goes over various photography related news from the past week. Occasionally, they have also published videos about High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, Tripods, and Photomerge. They also have a really active Flickr group with a lot of very skilled photographers. The only downside is that I always find something else I “need” after I listen to their podcast (now I want a D3 :-().
Currently, they are trying to get people to subscribe to their podcast through iTunes so they can try and stay in the top 10.
